چکیده

Research indicates that northern koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) are ubiquitously infected with koala retrovirus (KoRV). There is increasing evidence linking KoRV neoplasia and a range of disorders associated immunodeficiency, conditions observed at high rates in captive colonies, sick presenting to wildlife hospitals. However, less known about the occurrence these putative KoRV-associated diseases wild populations. We analysed health data collected veterinary examinations 691 inhabiting three monitored populations southeast Queensland between 2013 2020. At initial presentation, AIDS-like syndrome were detected prevalence 1.16% (8/691; 95% CI 0.5–2.19%). Longitudinal from recruited into monitoring programmes receiving one or more subsequent examination revealed an incidence rate 3.5 cases/100 koalas/year (95% 2.35–4.9). These findings indicate relatively small proportion studied affected by diseases. impact on individuals was severe, mortality diseased cohort. Furthermore, endure multiple threats, suffering severe declines recent decades. propose significance should be considered within this context further research interactions other drivers decline warranted.

Koala Retrovirus in Free-Ranging Populations — Prevalence

The prevalence of koala retrovirus (KoRV) provirus (DNA) and the average number of proviral insertions per cell vary in different free-ranging koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) populations across Australia. Populations in the northern states of Queensland and New South Wales have 100% proviral prevalence and mean proviral copy number of 140–165 per cell. In contrast, the proviral prevalence in the...

Transspecies transmission of the endogenous koala retrovirus.

The koala retrovirus (KoRV) is a gammaretrovirus closely related to the gibbon ape leukemia virus and induces leukemias and immune deficiencies associated with opportunistic infections, such as chlamydiosis. Here we characterize a KoRV newly isolated from an animal in a German zoo and show infection of human and rat cell lines in vitro and of rats in vivo, using immunological and PCR methods fo...

Identification of a novel subgroup of Koala retrovirus from Koalas in Japanese zoos.

We identified a new subgroup of koala retrovirus (KoRV), named KoRV-J, which utilizes thiamine transport protein 1 as a receptor instead of the Pit-1 receptor used by KoRV (KoRV-A). By subgroup-specific PCR, KoRV-J and KoRV-A were detected in 67.5 and 100% of koalas originating from koalas from northern Australia, respectively. Altogether, our results indicate that the invasion of the koala pop...
